How we research and rank

We research trail running gear against the demands of race day rather than the showroom, using manufacturer specifications, published race reports, and the consensus of the ultra community. Race context changes everything: a vest that fits at rest may bounce at mile 40, and a headlamp that reads bright on a spec sheet may be dangerously dim on technical night terrain.

Who writes these picks

TrailCadence is written and maintained by its editorial team. We publish under the TrailCadence name rather than a personal byline, because our rankings come from documented research rather than one person's hands-on experience. Where a specification, measurement, or figure appears in a guide, it comes from the manufacturer or a cited source, not from our own bench.

What we score on

Every pick is judged on the same criteria. We weight them by what actually matters for the way you will use the gear, then write up the tradeoffs honestly.

Race performance

How gear is reported to hold up under race conditions: pace, duration, and terrain. Quoted GPS battery figures are cross-checked against published long-run results and runner logs rather than taken from marketing copy alone.

Fit and system integration

A hydration vest has to work alongside poles, mandatory kit, and soft flasks at the same time. We assess each piece as part of a complete race system, using maker fit charts, capacity specs, and owner reports.

Durability over distance

Durability is judged at ultra distance, not over one training run. Sock and anti-chafe performance is drawn from 50-mile and 100-mile race writeups, where the failures actually surface.

Weight and packability

Weight compounds over 100 miles, and grams matter differently at mile 20 than at mile 80. We compare published carry weights and packed volumes across the category and name the tradeoffs honestly.

Value at race distance

A $229 Coros Pace 3 is not the same value proposition at a 50K as at a 100-miler. We position price against the distance and effort a product is built for.

How our picks work

Each category roundup is ranked by our editorial score. The highest-scored option carries the Top Pick badge. Separately, the option that delivers the most for the money carries the Best Value badge. They are often different products on purpose: the best-scored is not always the smartest buy for most people, and we tell you which is which.

What we never do

  • We take no payment, free product, or sponsorship in exchange for coverage or a ranking. There are no paid placements.
  • We do not claim to have tested a product we have not tested, and we do not publish reviews under the name of a person who does not exist.
  • We say what is wrong with a product, not just what is right. Every pick lists real tradeoffs.
  • We match recommendations to your situation (fitment, skill level, budget, and use case) instead of pushing one product on everyone.
  • Prices and specifications change. Always confirm the current price and fitment on the retailer's page before buying.

How we make money

TrailCadence is funded by affiliate commissions. When you buy through a link on our site, the retailer may pay us a small commission at no additional cost to you. That funding never influences our scores or our picks. Full details are on our affiliate disclosure.
